The institutes of higher education and employers in different countries ask for your English level and the IELTS Band Score measures it. There are no fixed criteria for band score acceptance by individual institutions. On the other hand, a test score above 5.5 is a basic minimum requirement. A better IELTS Band score shall increase the chances of acceptance of your application.
The IELTS Score is valid for a period of two years.
